Nuclear Veterans Let Down By Government

7.21.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 21st Apr 2009

The Government's announcement of more research into the health of the children of British servicemen exposed to radiation during nuclear bomb tests has been criticised for not going far enough.

Simon Wright, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for Norwich South, said:

"What nuclear test veterans and their children deserve is recognition and compensation for the ill effects that they've suffered. Other countries including the US, Russia and China have all given compensation, but our Government only seems prepared to announce yet more reviews and studies.

"This latest announcement, which offers nothing more than additional research, does nothing but stall progress on this issue.

"Those who've suffered deserve better treatment and proper recognition.

"It's outrageous that the issue of compensation has to be resolved by the courts rather than by the action of our Government."
