Vauhall Street Post Office Saved by Local Campaign

8.24.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 24th Jun 2008

Vauxhall Street Post Office has been spared the axe, as the outcome of the Post Office Ltd's consultation process over the future of branches in Norfolk becomes clearer.

Simon Wright, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for Norwich South, was amongst those leading the campaign to save the branch which had been put on the Post Office's closure list.

Mr Wright said:

"This is fantastic news. Local people have fought a brilliant campaign to save their local post office, and the community has been rewarded by its efforts. I received hundreds of letters from local people making detailed arguments for keeping this branch open, all of which will have been read by Post Office Ltd and Postwatch. The letters were really important and I'm grateful to everyone who made their views known."

"The case for keeping Vauxhall Street post office was overwhelming, and like so many other people I was astonished that it had been proposed for closure in the first place. There is a growing community in the area, which has complex needs many of which are served by their local post office."

"Malcolm [postmaster], has had such a difficult six months not knowing for certain his future. He had massive support from so many people in the area who has served for many years."

"We now wait to find out the fate of other branches in the area. I am very much of the opinion that all the post offices should be kept open. Like Vauxhall Street, they all provide an important service to their local areas."
